How We Test Fragrance Oils for Strength

First, we work closely with our vendors to identify trending fragrance oils via extensive market research. Our team then performs a blind triangle test on all the fragrance oils up for consideration. We test dozens of fragrances for every one new fragrance oil that makes the cut. After carefully selecting a final list for burn testing, we pour test candles and then burn them in a controlled environment.

We score the fragrance oils based on cold throw, hot throw, and personal preference. After all, candle scents can be subjective! So we collect as many data points as possible (ie. our entire staff) before launching a new collection to ensure we consistently deliver the strongest-throwing, best-performing fragrance oils. Pricing is crucial to this analysis, and we diligently consider the cost to benefit ratio so we can keep prices competitive for our customers.

We also frequently re-test fragrance oils already in the line on a routine basis to confirm they still throw the way the listing describes. This way, the description you read reflects how the oil actually performs in a burning candle, not just how it smells from the bottle.

Choosing the Right Fragrance Oil

Start from what you are making and the mood you want, then narrow by the specs that matter for your project. Fragrance oils vary in more than scent: check each product page for phthalate content, flash point, and vanillin (which can discolor light-colored wax). Our Fragrance Oils FAQ answers the common buying questions, and the guide to phthalate-free fragrance oils covers that spec in depth.

If you are testing scents for a new product line, a sample pack is the cheaper way to compare several before committing to full sizes. Once you find scents you like, the scent guide and our fragrance recipes show how to combine two or more oils into a signature blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fragrance oil for candles?

A fragrance oil is a scented oil made to hold up in melted wax and release its scent as the candle burns. It differs from a perfume oil or a raw aroma chemical in that it is blended to stay stable at pour temperature and to throw scent when heated. Every oil in this category is meant for candle making, and most also work in wax melts, soap, and other wax and cold-process projects.

How do I know a fragrance oil will smell strong in my candle?

Scent throw comes from three things you control: how much oil you add, the wax you use, and how long the candle cures. We strength-test every fragrance before it joins the catalog and re-test oils already in the line, so the throw you get matches how the oil is described. Load the oil to your wax's recommended maximum, usually 6 to 10 percent by weight, and cure the candle before you judge it. Our fragrance calculators work out the exact amount for your batch.

How much fragrance oil do I use per pound of wax?

Most candle waxes hold 6 to 10 percent fragrance by weight, which is roughly 1 to 1.6 ounces per pound. Start from the maximum your specific wax lists, since going over it can cause the oil to seep or the candle to burn poorly. The fragrance measuring guide and the calculators convert a percentage to the ounces for your pour.

Do you sell fragrance oils wholesale or in bulk?

Yes. Quantity pricing is built into every fragrance oil listing, so the per-ounce price drops at larger sizes with no separate account or order minimum to unlock it. Sizes run from sample and 1-ounce bottles up to bulk quantities, and with five U.S. warehouses a larger order ships at lower freight than a single-location supplier can offer.

Are your fragrance oils phthalate-free?

Many are. Every one is gathered in our phthalate-free fragrance oils category, and the status is listed on each product page so you can pick oils that fit your labeling. Our guide to the phthalate-free label explains what the term means and how it affects a candle.

How do I pick a fragrance oil if I am not sure what I want?

Browse by the category that fits the mood you are after, or start with a sample pack to test several scents before committing to full sizes. The scent guide walks through how a scent is built from top, heart, and base notes so you can read a description and predict how it will smell in wax.
